The countryside round Gnesta has been inhabited since the early Stone Age, and many remains dating from this early period can still be seen today everything from stone cairns and rock carvings to prehistoric fortresses.
Canoeing fans can paddle a forty-kilometre route between Åkers Styckebruk and Trosa by the sea. The route passes through lovely little lakes, through narrow, steep-sided channels and some exceptionally lovely countryside. At Marviken, you´ll find yourself in Södermanland´s most genuine wilderness, yet it´s mostly easy paddling with only a few portages.
The long-distance Sörmland hiking trail passes through Gnesta. It is well marked and rest areas are conveniently spaced along the way. Take your bike on the commuter train to Gnesta. The Water Lily Trail, a 70-kilometre bicycle trail, begins in Gnesta and takes you on a circular tour all round Södermanland. The community centre in Björnlunda is the start of Eriksgatan, a bike trail featuring numerous ancient cultural.
